Spanning the leeward side of Hawaii's Big Island, the district of Kona presents a majestic coastline highlighted by dramatic lava fields, shimmering white sand beaches and the mountains of Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Mauna Loa rising in the background. From the waters off Kailua-Kona, visitors onboard touring vessels can view such sights as Ahuena Heiau, Hulihe'e Palace, and Mokuaikaua Church, the first Christian church built in the state of Hawaii. Colorful underwater sights also abound.
